Waiting in Hope

Advent Week Two

December 10, 2023 / Matt Greco

Icon partner Matt Greco preached this past Sunday from Luke 2:22-40, entitled ‘Give Me That Old Time(rs) Religion.”

KEY POINTS:

  • Waiting looks different as you age
  • What are you waiting for?
    • In our scripture passage, they were waiting for the consolation of Israel (v 25) and the redemption of Jerusalem (v 38)
    • We see this elsewhere in scripture too (Psalm 94:19; 1 Cor 14:3; Books of Leviticus, Numbers, Ruth; Psalm 130:7)
  • Who am I waiting for?
  • Why wait?
    • We see different kinds of waiting in this passage: Mary (v 12-15), Joseph (v 25-30), Simeon (v 66), and Anna (v 84-106)
    • Isaiah 40:28-31; James 5:7
  • Summary: things and people disappoint! Be patient. The Lord has us wait. Know what you are waiting for, who you are waiting for, and why you wait in faith and in hope. Serve Him in the waiting.

COMMUNITY GROUP DISCUSSION:

  1. What are some of the memorable things you’ve waited for or are waiting for? Who are some of the people you have waited on / for? Tell the group a little about what changed in your life after the waiting.
  2. How would you respond to someone if asked why you can wait in hope? How can we witness to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through our posture of waiting in today’s cultural moment?
